Mini-Lessons from Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2011

These Mini-Lessons are posted on Twitter, and in China on Weibo, throughout the day. You can follow them there!

To get the most from them, you should try to use them in sentences, or discuss them with friends. Writing something on Twitter or Weibo is a great way to practice!
  • Link: Activities for ESL Students: Lots of quizzes, including bilingual ones. http://a4esl.org/
  • Hist [History]: feudalism: The system of responsibilities between kings, lords, and peasants in Medieval Europe.
  • Verb [Irregular Verbs]: I freeze water to make ice. I froze some water yesterday. I have frozen lots of water in my life. Make more sentences like these!
  • Idiom: swallow (a lie) hook, line, and sinker: believe (a lie) completely. "My boss swallowed my excuse hook, line, and sinker."
  • Pop [Pop Culture]: Star Wars: Popular science fiction films by George Lucas. Classic good-guy/bad-guy story, with cutting-edge special effects.
  • Slang: to push oneself: to force oneself to do something. "I was really tired last night, but I pushed myself to finish my homework."
  • Gov't [Government]: liberal: person who believes in progress and reform toward more personal freedom. Also an adj. Such belief is called "liberalism."

NOTES:
  1. The Idiom, the History and Government words, and some of the Pop Culture words, are from lists in the Dictionary of Cultural Literacy. I wrote the definitions and examples myself.
  2. The Link was found online; the Slang words, the Irregular Verbs, and some of the Pop Culture words are from my own lists, and I wrote the definitions and examples myself.
